Athlete Mental Health & Performance Psychiatry in Austin

Performance-Focused Mental Health Care for Athletes

Whether you're training for your next race, returning from injury, or balancing competition with work and life, Peak Mind Psychiatry provides specialized psychiatric evaluations and medication management for athletes across Texas.

Led by Peter Clauter, PMHNP-BC—a competitive endurance athlete and board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner—care is designed for runners, cyclists, triathletes, swimmers, and athletes navigating ADHD, anxiety, burnout, depression, sleep challenges, and performance-related stress.

Who This Is For

Whether you're preparing for your first marathon or competing nationally, psychiatric care should understand the demands of your sport.

You don't need to be an elite athlete. If the mental side of training and competition matters to you, you're in the right place.

Mental Health Conditions Treated

Peak Mind Psychiatry provides specialized psychiatric care for athletes experiencing:

A specific note on fueling and eating: underfueling, RED-S, and disordered eating are common in endurance sport and are genuinely dangerous, not a discipline badge. I evaluate this carefully and treat it as part of a team that includes your physician and a sports dietitian. If those problems are the primary issue, I will tell you directly and make sure you have the right level of care, which is sometimes more than one prescriber can provide alone.

How I Work

I treat the mental side of performance the way I'd treat any complex system: understand the inputs before changing anything. Training load, sleep, fueling, life stress, and underlying psychiatric conditions all interact, and an attention or mood complaint in an athlete is rarely just one thing. Evaluations are thorough. I'd rather adjust one variable at a time than stack medications, and I coordinate with the people already in your corner — your coach, physician, therapist, and dietitian — when you want me to.

Medication is a tool, not the plan. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes the answer is fixing sleep and fueling, and I'll say so.

Medication and Competition Eligibility

If you compete under an anti-doping authority — USADA, WADA, NCAA, or a governing body — some psychiatric medications, including common ADHD stimulants, are restricted or banned without a Therapeutic Use Exemption. This matters before anything is prescribed, not after. I will talk through eligibility implications with you up front and, where appropriate, support the documentation a TUE requires. If you're a competitive athlete, raise this at the first visit so we plan around it.
